Life in Balance
Our wellbeing arises from caring for ourselves and engaging with others, attending to our mind, body and relationships, and making positive contributions to others. We also need to balance physical activity and mental excitement with rest and reflection, while engaging mindfully in activities that can be fully savored in the moment.
Life Unbalanced
Modern society and technology conspire with our psychology and biology to pull our lives out of balance. Our society values excitement and achievement over contentment and acceptance. Technology and media compete for our time and attention. And our minds and bodies are designed to survive scarcity not abundance.
Resilient Wellbeing
We can build resilient wellbeing through the choices we make every day over time. Attending to important aspects of our life, even when they aren't going well, helps us avoid life crises. And having multiple "wellsprings" to draw upon helps us weather losses and life's challenges with greater resilience and less pain.
Fragile Wellbeing
Pursuing experiences we enjoy with people we like can improve our wellbeing in the moment. But without a wide range of wellbeing sources, our wellbeing becomes more fragile. When unhappy in a part of our life, we focus on fun activities. But we get less enjoyment from these activities over time, while the source of our discontent worsens from neglect, often leading to crisis.

Nurture a Variety of Wellbeing Wellsprings
Resilience Results from Having a Range of Wellbeing Sources
Pursuing a variety of positive experiences helps grow and sustain well-being while mitigating the impact of losses. Feeling a range of positive emotions helps us explore and pursue more novel positive experiences, increasing our psychological resilience and ability to cope with stressors.
Balance and Resilience
Pursue a range of positive experiences and nurture a range of positive feelings to increase overall wellbeing and better sustain wellbeing gains during difficult times
Activity Levels
Activity Range
Engaging in a wider range of enjoyable activities with varying excitement levels improves well being, leading to a broader range of positive emotions. Increasing the variety of positive experiences, along with increased appreciation of these positive experiences through savoring and gratitude, reduces the tendency for the amount of happiness from the same activities to decrease with repetition, and thereby increases the stability of wellbeing improvements.
Excitement Levels
Excitement Range
Feeling a wide range of positive emotions, such as joy, gratitude, serenity and pride, has been shown to increase wellbeing. Positive feelings with lower excitement levels such as contentment are strong predictors of higher wellbeing and life satisfaction. People who more frequently feel positive emotions spanning from low to high excitement levels are better able to cope with stress and respond to adverse situations with psychological resilience.
